Dr. Mercer or Dr. Major will place earphones in your ears and ask you to listen to different pitched sounds. You will press a clicker every time you hear beeps, even when they are very very soft. You’ll listen to words and repeat them, too.

This test helps them know the condition of the eardrum and middle ear. It creates variations of pressure in the ear canal and helps them to determine the size of the ear canal and the mobility of the eardrum. While they are performing the test you will feel some pressure and hear a hum. The slight pressure felt isn’t uncomfortable and only lasts for one to two seconds.

A probe, like an earbud, is placed in your ear and you sit still and quiet. You will hear a series of tones, but you don’t need to respond. The probe sends sound into the ear and the amazing healthy inner ear will “send” sound back. We measure the sound waves that return. This evaluation tells us if the cells responsible for hearing mid to high pitched sounds are healthy or not.

The Cognivue cognitive screening is the newest addition to our test battery! In recent years a strong connection between hearing loss and dementia has been identified. Those who have hearing loss have between two and five times more risk of developing dementia. As part of our comprehensive care, we offer a cognitive screening that will help to identify a baseline of your current cognitive function and help us to appropriately meet your needs.

You will listen to sentences with noise in the background and be asked to repeat the sentences. The results indicate how your auditory system functions when presented with speech in challenging environments. This is extremely valuable information for the audiologist to have to make appropriate recommendations regarding potential hearing devices and assistive listening devices.

Auditory Brainstem Response is a test that allows us to verify the integrity of your 8th cranial nerve, the auditory-vestibular nerve. During this examination, electrodes will be affixed to the skin on the forehead and behind each ear. You will lie comfortably on the exam table and hear loud clicking sounds. There is no response required from you.

Removal of cerumen (earwax) from the ear canals using a combination of processes including the use of suction and/or curettes.

Videonystagmography “V” using video and an infrared camera, “N” nystagmus or involuntary eye movements, “G” to graph measurements. The use of video goggles accurately documents eye movement using infrared signals. With this technology we can not only measure the eye movements, but we can see them and capture video of their movement.

During this section of the VNG you will be asked to follow a light with your eyes while the movement is monitored via video goggles.

The audiologist will present cool and warm air into your ear canals. This may give you a sensation of spinning or wooziness for a short time. This test helps us determine how well your vestibular systems are functioning.

The Dix-Hallpike Maneuver is a way to determine if a patient is experiencing positional vertigo, commonly known as BPPV. The patient is asked to start from a seated position on the table and is then assisted to lie back with their head turned to each side. If this provokes spinning dizziness (vertigo) and the patient is diagnosed with BPPV, then the patient can be treated.

The most commonly employed technique for treatment of benign positional vertigo is the canalith repositioning maneuver. It is a simple series of head and body positions performed specifically by the audiologist to reposition the particles back into the correct location in the vestibular system. The procedure only takes a few minutes to complete, and most patients only require one to two treatments.

A diagnostic test used to evaluate specific areas of the vestibular system like the saccule. The audiologist will clean the skin of your forehead, neck and sternum. Small surface electrodes will be affixed to the skin and earphones placed in the ears. The patient is required to lie on the table and lift the head while clicking sounds are presented in the headphones.

Small surface electrodes will be affixed to the skin and earphones placed in the ears. The patient is required to focus the eyes on a specified target while clicking sounds are presented in the headphones.

A combination of cVEMP and oVEMP

The process in which the audiologist determines if a patient is a candidate for cochlear implantation. Testing includes standard audiological examination as well as testing with hearing aids to determine efficacy. The patient is asked to repeat sentences in quiet and noise while wearing their hearing aids.

During this appointment, the audiologist will “start up” the cochlear implant processor. The patient will be asked to listen to sounds through their implant for the first time to ensure comfort levels. This establishes the “MAP” or programming of the processor and how it will deliver power to the internal electrode array. The audiologist will also measure impedances of the internal electrodes and measure the status of the auditory nerve. Then, the audiologist will teach the patient how to use their new processor; how to put it on and take it off, use the batteries and charger, care and maintenance. Counseling is provided regarding realistic expectations and aural rehabilitation requirements.

At subsequent mapping appointments, the audiologist and patient will continue to fine tune the MAP at the patient’s comfort levels. It is expected to need at least 3-4 additional mapping appointments after start up as the patient’s brain is accommodating to the new sound.

At certain intervals the audiologist will test the patient with their cochlear implant processor in the booth. This allows us to compare their pre-operative performance with their post-operative performance. This testing is typically done 3, 6, and 12 months after cochlear implantation.

Intermediate hearing aid technology is designed to be smarter in noise than basic technology. It will have different modes such as calm, speech in noise, comfort in noise and music that it automatically evaluates and changes between. Intermediate devices are better than basic for individuals who are more active and in noise or groups more often. These are also designed for individuals who are more physically active with features such as wind noise blockers and movement detection.

One of the Gold Standard tools in the audiologist’s kit is called Real Ear Measurement. It is widely considered an industry “best standard of care” procedure when fitting hearing devices. This procedure uses a small probe microphone to measure the sound in the ear canal and verifies that the hearing aid is providing the right amount of amplification for a particular hearing loss prescription. This is important because each ear canal differs in shape, size, and acoustic resonance. So, the same hearing aid, with the same settings on different people, can deliver quite a varied performance simply based on these individual ear canal differences. Real ear measures help the skilled audiologist compensate for these individual differences accurately.

The Redux system extracts moisture from hearing aids, cochlear implants, AirPods, and headphones. It improves the functionality and sound quality of hearing aids.

One or two hearing aids

A diagnostic assessment that evaluates a hearing aid’s performance and compares it to prescriptive data for your hearing loss. It’s important to regularly determine if the hearing aid is performing to manufacturers specifications. Hearing aids are placed in a sound resistant chamber connected to a cavity that mimics the ear canal. The computer produces a broad group of sounds, the hearing aid picks up the sound, and a tiny microphone inside the cavity measures the sound output of the hearing aid.

5 Keys to Communication is an auditory rehabilitation program we proudly offer to our patients. We strongly believe that educating yourself and your loved ones about hearing loss and its challenges makes all the difference in your successes. The program includes helpful information such as communication strategies for when problems occur, hearing aid care and use, information regarding other assistive devices, links to consumer organizations and hearing loss support groups, and auditory training programs.

Service Agreements include unlimited office visits and device troubleshooting, hearing aid dehumidification, wireless pairing and instruction, and diagnostic electroacoustic evaluation of hearing device function. Service contracts are offered to our patients who are approaching the end of their manufacturer warranty, or to our patients who have no service coverage via their insurance plans.

By far the gold standard in understanding conversation in the presence of background noise! Roger utilizes multiple microphone arrays to pick up the desired speech and stream it directly into your hearing devices. Roger microphones can be pointed at the desired source of speech, placed in the center of the table at a restaurant, and even worn by the communication partner. As an added bonus, Roger also works as a TV streamer!

Replaceable filters that are found in custom and Receiver in Canal (RIC) hearing devices. Wax filters catch wax to prevent damage to the electronic components of your hearing devices.
